The crew hurries back to the village to help Cain, after which he explains that Leona and the soldiers are his Idelva Army allies. But soon more of Reinhardtzar's men appear and a battle begins.

Whoa... What's going on?

While flying high above the village, Vyrn gets a shock watching the scene below.

He hurries back down to Gran and the crew, who are eager to hear from him.

Katalina

What happened? It sounded like you were yelling something.

Lyria

And there was a loud noise coming from the village just now too...

Vyrn

I-I'm not really sure... But some lady showed up all of a sudden, and well...

Dialogue Option

Let's check it out.

Katalina

I agree... Something might be happening that even Cain didn't predict.

Dialogue Option

Let's wait here.

Katalina

I don't know... I'm curious about this woman who's appeared.

Katalina

If she's an enemy of Cain's, then he'll need reinforcement.

Gran and the crew decide to leave the seal and head for the village.

Meanwhile in the village, the sound of footsteps fills the air.

Soldier

The road from the port to the village has been secured!

Soldier

The outlaws we engaged on the way here have been apprehended, and the entire army should arrive any moment.

???

Good work. Hurry and move them to the village, but remain vigilant.

Soldier

Roger!

Reinhardtzar seems bewildered for a moment before his expression twists into rage.

Reinhardtzar

You... You're with the Idelva Army, aren't you!

But the woman ignores him, her eyes drawn to Cain who has jumped in between a villager and Reinhardtzar.

Cain...

Cain

Whew... You saved me back there, Leo.

Leona

Cain. You're getting a long lecture after this.

Cain

What!

Reinhardtzar raises his voice at Cain.

Reinhardtzar

Cain! You coward... You were buying time all along!

Cain

Nope... I had my own plans. But it was only a matter of time before the army showed up.

Cain

If I could, I would've wanted to avoid the head-to-head clash we've got here.

Cain

I knew if you and the Idelva Army went at it full speed, neither one of you would get away with just a scratch...

Reinhardtzar

...

As Cain and Reinhardtzar glare at each other, soldiers continue pouring into the village.

Just as tension fills the air, Gran and the crew arrive on the scene.

Lyria

Cain! Are you all right?

Katalina

Cain, who are all these people?

Katalina stays on her guard as she looks around at the soldiers gathering in the village.

Cain

No need to fret. Leo and the soldiers are all my allies.

Cain then turns to speak to Reinhardtzar.

Cain

So... let's end this, shall we? The stalemate's over. And it's your loss, Reinhardtzar.

Reinhardtzar

No... We haven't lost yet.

Reinhardtzar then sets his gaze toward the fortress.

Outlaws

Tzar!

A swarm of outlaws comes rushing in with a fiery bloodlust in their eyes.

Reinhardtzar

You can see the whole island from that fortress. Your army here's not the only backup that's arrived.

Reinhardtzar

We won't run. And we're not scared to fight... unlike you.

Cain

...

Reinhardtzar

If you want to defeat us, you'd better give it all you've got!

Reinhardtzar

You're never gonna stop us!

Amidst the battle Cain sees a soldier about to harm an outlaw who's already surrendered, so he throws himself between the two to protect the outlaw. Reinhardtzar sees this act of kindness and orders all of his men to surrender.

Outlaw 1

Rrraaah!

Soldier

Haaah!

The clash between the Idelva Army and Reinhardtzar's gang of outlaws soon turns into chaos.

Cain

Curses... How'd it end up like this?

Cain

We could've settled this without a fight...

Leona

Cain, we'll have plenty of time to mull over that later.

Leona

Right now we've got to win the battle we're in.

Cain

I know. It's just...

Overwhelmed, Cain shakes his head.

But in that moment, something catches his attention and he dashes off.

Cain

...!

Leona

Cain! What're you doing! It's dangerous out there, so don't...

Unable to make herself heard, she can only watch as he runs straight into the thick of the battle.

Leona

Oh, come on!

Outlaw 1

Nghh!

Soldier

It's the end of the line! Now you have to give up!

Outlaw 1

All r-right! You've got me! I surrender!

As he surrenders, the outlaw throws his weapon on the ground.

But the soldier's intentions remain unchanged as he swings his blade toward the outlaw's throat.

Soldier

Haaah!

Outlaw 1

Eek!

Cain

Huff... Huff... Don't... That's enough...

Cain defends the outlaw, unsheathing his blade in an instant to block the soldier's attack.

Soldier

General! Are you trying to get yourself killed?

Cain breathes heavily, gesturing toward the fearful outlaw.

Cain

Sorry... but he'd already thrown away his weapon and his will to fight.

Cain

You've already done enough. Don't kill him.

Soldier

Yes, s-sir...

Overwhelmed by Cain's actions, the soldier solemnly leaves the two.

Standing a bit further away is Reinhardtzar, who quietly reflects on the scene he's just witnessed.

Reinhardtzar

...

Leona

Cain!

Cain

Sorry about that! But look! I'm perfectly f-fine!

Cain

...!

Suddenly Cain crouches low and clutches his leg.

Leona

Cain! Are you all right? Why'd you have to go and get hurt...

But in the next moment he stands back up with a grin.

Cain

I told you I'm fine! Besides...

Cain

...!

Suspecting an attack, Cain steps in front of Leona to protect her.

Cain

Reinhardtzar!

Reinhardtzar

...

Reinhardtzar remains silent as he slowly raises his hands.

Cain

...?

Reinhardtzar

It's over. I'll admit that we've lost. We'll hand the island back over to Idelva.

Outlaw 2

Tzar!

Reinhardtzar

No matter what we do, there's no chance of winning. I see that now.

Reinhardtzar

This is an order. Everyone, drop your weapons.

With a stone-cold expression, Reinhardtzar gives his final command to the outlaws.

Outlaws

One by one the outlaws place their weapons on the ground.

Cain

Reinhardtzar...

Reinhardtzar

Sorry, but I lied to you. I could never sacrifice my men no matter what.

Reinhardtzar

I've lost both my country and my pride. I've become worthless.

Reinhardtzar

But the least I can do now is protect the lives of my comrades.

With these words Reinhardtzar surrenders.

And the battle over Merkmal Island comes to a close.

Cain reveals that he's a general in the Idelva Army and explains to the crew the danger of the seal they'd secured earlier. He invites the crew to stay in Idelva Kingdom as guests while he helps them find their missing friends.

Having surrendered to Idelva Kingdom, all the outlaws, regardless of their injuries, are to be escorted to the capital.

The crew is gathered nearby, and Vyrn decides to ask the burning question on everyone's mind.

Vyrn

So... Just who are you anyway, Cain?

Katalina

It sounded like one of those soldiers just called you a general...

Katalina and the crew seem perplexed, but Cain answers in his usual carefree demeanor.

Cain

Yeah... I'm sort of a general for the Idelva Kingdom.

Katalina

You?

Leona

Well... let me take over from here.

The woman introduces herself as Leona, Cain's adjutant.

Leona

Thank you so much for looking out for Cain... my little brother-in-law.

Dialogue Option

He's a handful.

Leona

Ohhh... I'm very, very, very sorry then.

Lyria

Oh! But, see... he also shared a lot with us, so he was a big help too.

Cain

That's right! If you think about it, it was kind of a give-and-take!

He was, but not before getting us involved in his crazy antics only seconds after meeting him...

Leona

Ah... I knew there was more to the story. I'm really sorry.

Cain

Well, you know, I was in a bit of a tight spot...

Katalina

I knew you were clever considering all the knowledge you had, but I'd never have pegged you for military...

Vyrn

But that means you're top brass or something, right?

Vyrn

So what were you doing arguing with outlaws all by yourself when we first saw you?

Cain looks uncomfortable about answering but begins to speak.

Cain

I thought there might be something I could do to avoid a war. So I did some investigating.

Cain

Truth is, His Majesty has already given a decree ordering the outlaws of Merkmal Island to be suppressed.

Cain

After checking into the state of the island, I knew there'd be full-on resistance from the outlaws if the army made a move.

Cain

In looking for a way to prevent that, I came across an interesting piece of data.

Cain

I learned that there's a self-destruct seal for the fortress, so I began to wonder if I could take advantage of it somehow.

Cain then explains the purpose of the seal to Gran and the crew.

Lyria

I can't believe it was so dangerous...

Katalina

Indeed... You were trying to make us do something unthinkable.

Cain

And I apologize for that. I'm really sorry!

He glances at his feet in a moment of sincere remorse.

Cain

But it was only a tool for negotiation. I never intended for the fortress to be destroyed.

Cain

I thought that if I could get control of it, then they'd quietly give up the island.

Cain

Ah, but in the end, Reinhardtzar read me like a book and turned my threat against me.

Katalina

Vyrn

But e-everyone's still alive! Isn't that what's important?

Leona backs up Vyrn's awkward attempt to turn lemons into lemonade.

Leona

That's true. The point is that all of you made it through unharmed.

Leona

Now then, Gran, I heard you're searching for some lost friends.

Cain, who's clearly only just remembered his promise, chimes in.

Cain

Ah, that's right... I promised if you helped me, I'd make it worth your while!

Cain

If you're searching for something, you'll need information and a base of operations.

Cain

So I thought, why not come to Idelva Kingdom for a spell?

Cain

You helped us get back the island, and that's enough reason for the country to welcome you as a guest.

Cain

I can't promise you lots of resources, but I'll do everything in my power to help you find your friends.

Katalina seems pleased by Cain's offer.

Katalina

I see now... This is what you meant by making it worth our while.

Katalina

Your offer is just the help we need right now.

We happily accept.

Cain

Great! We welcome your addition, Gran!

Hey now... shouldn't we just accept his offer here?

Vyrn

We don't have a plan, and we're stuck in Nalhegrande. I think he could help us out!

Lyria

I think so too... We won't be able to find everyone on our own.

After accepting his offer, Gran and the crew decide to follow Cain to Idelva Kingdom.

But hidden in the smoldering ashes of the battle is a quietly burning yet defiant flame.

Gran and the crew decide to follow Cain to Idelva Kingdom, but Reinhardtzar breaks his restraints for a final stand. Lyria senses that he's using a power similar to that of a primal beast, but the crew must fight him alone, as Cain is injured and unable to help.

Katalina sighs heavily as the crew heads to an Idelva airship.

Katalina

For a while I wasn't sure what tomorrow would bring.

Katalina

And although we're not quite back on track yet, I feel as if we can rest easy for now.

Vyrn

You said it. We can finally take a breather!

Vyrn lets out a sigh as well, but Cain's expression becomes visibly tense.

Cain

Well, not exactly... I forgot to mention that it's a little soon to let down your guard.

Lyria

Huh? What do you mean?

Just then the sound of breaking metal rips through the air.

Reinhardtzar

Raaah!

Having broken his restraints, Reinhardtzar swings a thick arm toward Cain.

Leona

...

But due to Leona's foresight, his strike doesn't land.

Reinhardtzar

Tch... You saw that coming too, huh?

Cain

I figured you'd try something before we left the island.

Cain

Because I know that you're not one to give up like that.

Cain

But with your men outnumbered, the only way to save their lives was to surrender.

Cain

Still, if you were determined to fight...

Cain

Then you'd take a chance to get the biggest victory at the smallest cost.

Cain

In other words you'd try crushing the general... that general being me.

Reinhardtzar sneers at Cain.

Reinhardtzar

Just because you think you know me... don't you dare think you can stop me!

Reinhardtzar

Might makes right! Influence, military strength...

Reinhardtzar

Take your pick! No matter what kind, overwhelming power repels all.

As a glow envelops Reinhardtzar, Lyria lets out a gasp.

Lyria

That power! It feels like primal beast power...

Cain

Nope, this power is totally different. Reinhardtzar used to be a Torhid soldier after all.

Vyrn

What? What's that supposed to mean?

Cain

I'll explain later. But if he goes unhinged, then his very life will be in danger.

Cain

So we've gotta hurry...

Cain

Nghh!

Cain crouches down suddenly, clutching his leg.

Leona

Cain... Don't tell me...

Leona abruptly kicks Cain in the leg.

Cain

Ow! Leo... You could've just asked...

Leona

Since back then?

Cain

Yeah...

Leona

Ahhh...

Katalina

What's wrong? Are you all right?

Leona hesitates a moment before making a plea to Gran and the crew.

Leona

Gran. I hate to ask this of you, but could you take care of this battle for us?

Cain

Wait! Leo! I can still fight...

Cain

Ow!

Cain howls after a second swift kick from Leona.

Leona

Cain, you'll only hold us back in the state you're in.

Leona

How can you say you won't let anyone die when you're on the verge of death yourself?

Cain

Cain goes quiet, and Leona uses the opportunity to speak again to Gran.

Leona

I'm really sorry... but could you lend us your strength just once more?

Cain

I'm sorry too, Gran... But can I count on you?

Dialogue Option

We're on it.

Leona

You know... you're a real stand-up crew.

Dialogue Option

Be good in the meantime.

Leona

Don't worry. If he tries anything, then I'll be sure to stop him.

Vyrn

Heh heh! Well, we can't leave you now as far as we've come together!

Lyria

Right! And we can still put up a fight, so you just stay there and rest, Cain.

Katalina

Besides, there's nowhere to for us to run anymore.

Katalina

This is it! Get ready for a fight, Gran!

Gran and the crew defeat Reinhardtzar, who soon falls unconscious. Leona explains that Reinhardtzar may face death for his crimes, but Cain swears that he won't allow that to happen.

Reinhardtzar

Curses...

Having used up all his power, Reinhardtzar crumbles to his knees.

Outlaw

Tzar!

Reinhardtzar

I'm sorry... It looks like I've reached my limit...

With no strength left to support himself, Reinhardtzar slowly collapses to the ground.

Outlaw

Tzar? Hey, he doesn't mean...

Leona

It's all right. He's still breathing. He's only lost consciousness.

On hearing this the outlaws, as well as Cain, Gran, and the crew, breathe a sigh of relief.

Vyrn

He really fought till the end for his friends, huh?

Vyrn

I know he's an outlaw, but I think I get where he's coming from.

Lyria

What will happen to him after this?

Leona

He'll be taken to the kingdom's main island and receive his punishment as an outlaw gang leader.

Leona

But they won't go easy on him for the unlawful occupancy of this island.

Leona

On top of that, he made the island a base to attempt an uprising and declare independence...

Leona

If he's punished as the leader of the uprising, then in the worst case...

Leona falls silent, but her sullen expression speaks volumes.

Cain continues, unabashedly declaring his intent.

Cain

I won't let him die. Count on it.

Cain

I didn't fight this hard only to let him to lose his life.

Cain

The best outcome for the outlaws is the same for both us and the villagers. And that's to get out of this unharmed.

His methods might be backwards, but he's a pretty good guy after all!

Reflecting aloud on Cain's much-too-mellow attitude, Leona sighs as she holds her head in her hands.

And on a high note, Gran and the crew are finally ready to visit Idelva Kingdom to begin the search for their missing friends.
