Hey, Attorney Lady. Was it really a good idea to leave Lyria and the others behind?

Guillota

Well... A field trip to a place where people get offed doesn't exactly scream fun.

Vyrn

Yeah... Lyria and Io didn't seem too thrilled.

Guillota

It's not hard to see why. Anyway, the smaller the group, the better.

Zarazustra

But why the execution site?

Guillota

It'd be great if this scarf would turn into the mask again, but it looks like that was a one-time deal.

Guillota

What I saw was a jumbled mess, what with my dreams and the mask's memory mashing up against each other. I want to revisit everything related to the case.

Zarazustra

You were spurred on by a scarf coming from a woman called a shrine priestess...

Guillota

Mm-hm. Y'know, she seemed to really trust Gran.

Guillota

You ought to hold onto the scarf, and you better not lose it.

Guillota

Ah, and another thing. If it becomes a mask again, you probably shouldn't let Lyria wear it.

Guillota

I saw Ruby Pop Irotis. Her eyes were completely red, and she looked... out of it. It was creepy.

Guillota

Come here a sec, Gran. This is for you only.

Guillota leans in close and whispers into Gran's ear.

Guillota

It's a message from the priestess. She said, "Look for the coffer at the bottom of the blue."

Guillota

I wasn't sure if Lyria was supposed to hear that too.

Guillota pulls away from Gran as if nothing had happened.

Gran studies the neatly folded scarf.

Showing no signs of becoming a mask again, it looks like a common piece of neckwear.

But from the moment Gran's fingers brush against the threads, the captain knows it came from the shrine priestess.

Gran embarked on a journey first started by their parents, and it falls to the captain to rescue the shrine priestess.

Feeling that it's another step toward the ultimate destination, Gran stows the scarf away.

Right next to the letter that reads: "I'll be waiting for you in Estalucia, the Island of the Astrals."

Examining the actual execution grounds, Guillota remarks that it doesn't smell of death, leading her to believe it hasn't been used for several years. Zarazustra is shaken—if people discover no executions took place, it might flip the judiciary on its head. Guillota simply laughs, saying that things are getting interesting.

Attending Knight

An inspection? Now?

Guillota

Yes, for attorney reasons. Shouldn't be a problem, right?

Attending Knight

I guess it's probably okay...

The knight relays Guillota's request to the gatekeeper who hesitates but lets them through.

Zarazustra

Guillota, what are we looking for?

Guillota

I want to compare the copies of the logs we were provided by the state to their originals.

Zarazustra

Logs meaning the execution logs?

Guillota

Yep. And then I want to see the actual room itself.

Dialogue Option

The place where the executions happened?

Guillota

Yeah. I doubt it'll be inviting, so I'm counting on having your moral support.

Zarazustra

I'll go anywhere to rescue Raclitus.

They're taken to an office, where Guillota compares her copy of the execution logs to the originals.

After confirming that nothing is amiss, their next stop is the big one.

Zarazustra

It's through these doors?

Attending Knight

Yes. The execution site.

Zarazustra

Oh...

Guillota

Don't be afraid. It's not like they leave the corpses out to rot.

Attending Knight

Absolutely not. The bodies of the criminals are immediately moved through a secret passage and presumably buried.

Zarazustra

Presumably? You don't know?

Attending Knight

"Although criminals in life, their dignity at the time of their execution must not be tarnished," we're told. Therefore only the executioner is allowed to be present for the deed.

Attending Knight

This is, after all, an establishment that conforms to the letter of the law.

Zarazustra

I see...

Guillota

You've been through a lot in life, so I'm guessing you probably have conflicting feelings. Same goes for me to tell you the truth.

Guillota

But at the same time, and especially as a law practitioner, having the chance to gain practical knowledge is worthwhile.

Guillota

I think this experience will be good for your development too. Let's help each other learn what we can.

Zarazustra

Okay...

Their knight escort nods to the doorkeeper, who then opens the doors. A large open square greets their eyes.

Guillota

Well, well, well...

The square is devoid of bodies like the knight had said. In fact, aside from the pristine sandy floor and spotless stone walls, there's nothing else.

Zarazustra

Is this really where they execute people?

Guillota

This is the place, all right, but it's definitely odd. It feels so spacious and relaxing. I don't detect a whiff of blood anywhere.

Zarazustra remains bewildered while Guillota calmly confirms her findings.

Gran is also familiar with this feeling of discomfort.

Guillota

You get what I'm saying, don't you, Gran? It's a good thing I had you two come with.

Guillota

When three people get the same gut feeling of dread, it can't be a fluke. Thanks for the help.

Zarazustra

Do you know what it is we're feeling?

Guillota

Mm-hm. Since we have something in common, I'll let you in on a secret.

Guillota

When a person dies, the smell of death doesn't just go poof and disappear, no matter how much you scrub.

When I was at death's door, I got a whiff of it—the smell of death itself waiting on the other side. It stains the spot where someone dies.

Zarazustra

The smell of looming death itself... I kind of know what you mean, but I can't really explain it...

Gran understands what they're both trying to say. The captain had felt the feeling before from a personal deathly experience.

Every time danger strikes, it always feels like there's something lurking in the shadows, reaching out to grab its victim.

Guillota

I'm going to guess no one's died here in years.

Guillota

It's too bad the court doesn't accept evidence derived from one's sixth sense.

Guillota

Luckily we'll have hard proof, assuming Rackam and Eugen complete the investigation I assigned them to.

Zarazustra

Are you sure we should expose this? This could cause a major shake up for the judiciary!

Guillota

Oh, for sure. It's gonna be huge. It might even turn the whole kingdom topsy-turvy.

Zarazustra

What! Are you trying to topple the system?

Guillota

Hehehe... Things are heating up.

Guillota

All the more reason to be on the lookout for assassins. Don't let them get me, Gran.

Returning to Guillota's office, the attorney goes over the reports gathered by Rackam and Eugen. Once contented with not rocking the boat, now it's as if she wants to challenge the whole kingdom. When pressed by Zarazustra about her newfound enthusiasm, she replies she wants to hit back at people who abuse the system.

Zarazustra

Are you feeling all right, Guillota? You were tossing and turning in your sleep.

Guillota

It's these darn nightmares. Can't even grab a decent afternoon nap without seeing one.

Eugen

Gettin' chased by assassins and the Otherworld will do that to ya. Oughta take a vacation after this case.

Guillota

I'm way ahead of you. Thanks to you guys, that might come sooner than expected.

Guillota grins as she thumbs through the papers acquired by Eugen and Rackam.

Rackam

Still, you're really runnin' yourself ragged, unlike before.

Guillota

What? I'm always serious when it comes to work. Look, Zarazustra's firing on all cylinders too.

Zarazustra

I examined the figures for the first half of the year, and you're right, Guillota.

Guillota

Show me.

Ledgers for the kingdom's imports and exports. Records of domestically consumed raw materials. Every document is analyzed one by one.

Guillota

You guys are outstanding. Would one or two of you be interested in joining me full-time?

Guillota

Being a public defender doesn't pay very well, but you don't have to worry about commission either. You'll still have enough to afford three square meals.

They can't tell if she's joking or not. Guillota rises out of her chair.

The usually passive Guillota has a raging fire in her eyes.

Eugen shrugs at the new tone Guillota has taken and leaves the office with Rackam to gather more evidence.

On the eve of Raclitus's second hearing, Guillota asks Katalina to take her place should anything happen to her. Guillota confesses she bears a grudge against certain aspects of Istavion law and that loopholes in the system overburdened her family with debt, which in the end claimed their lives. That pushed her to become an attorney, and she wants to win this case for future generations.

Days go by.

Guillota

We've built a solid case for the trial. I think we got this.

Katalina

You said the True King's objective has to be exposed in order to stop Raclitus's execution. Have you figured out what that is?

Guillota

Not really, but I'll try to establish a motive at the next hearing.

Katalina

Which is slated for tomorrow. I ran through the prepared materials like you asked me to.

Guillota

Thanks a ton. If anything happens to me, please take my place, Ms. Katalina.

Guillota takes a deep breath as she leafs through the stack of papers plastered with sticky notes.

In any case, our opponents have to pay.

You're so serious about this, almost like your whole thing about not stepping on people's toes was a lie. What's the target of your ire?

Guillota

The laws of this kingdom. Namely, their narrow interpretations on what's prohibited.

Katalina

Guillota

As long as it's not written down somewhere, anything goes. That's the secret to loopholes.

Guillota

My family were buried up to their necks in debt. The debts were normal until they got illegally jacked up. In the end I lost my parents.
