I'm curious myself, you know. Your home life on Ebisu couldn't be described as normal.

Loki

Summoning Ebisu might clear up a few things, although it should be half dead by now. Now how would that happen to an immortal primal beast?

Plus, I can't help but wonder about the emotions you keep so close to your chest.

The crew arrives at Wakwaaq Island, once known as a commercial hub for Istavion. Destroyed by the Otherworld, it now lies in ruins, with its composite primal nowhere to be found. To top it off, Gran's suspicions about their predicament continue to mount. The crew was originally supposed to come to Wakwaaq Island for an audience with the local viceroy, but everyone aside from Gran and Rackam seem to have forgotten this fact. Regardless, they press on in search of whatever awaits them.

Wakwaaq Island was once a thriving landscape until it was destroyed in a battle against the Otherworld.

It used to be a central pillar of Istavion's commerce, contributing greatly to growing the kingdom's economy. Today it bears nothing of its past glory.

Vyrn

This place is a wasteland, but you can still sorta tell people used to live here.

Katalina

Lyria, do you sense any composite primal beast at all?

Lyria

Lyria

No. I think whatever primal that used to be on this island disappeared a long time ago.

Rosetta

Mm... What I'm hearing on the wind sounds like the poor thing's final lament after failing to protect its island.

Lyria

Yeah... It's a voice full of painful sorrow.

Gran

This was meant to be a trip to greet the living; instead it's akin to visiting death's abode.

Gran has no explanation for how the island fell into utter ruin.

However, the captain has a theory: the island only collapsed right as they began collecting the Sky Map pieces scattered throughout Istavion.

Somehow the Otherworld has pulled one step ahead with the crew none the wiser.

Eugen

Oy, don't get stuck wallowin' in the blues, Captain. I know things look bleak, but that doesn't mean we gotta walk away empty-handed.

So... you're saying you have a plan, Eugen?

Eugen

Call it more of a hunch, but you heard what Lyria and Rosetta said about the composite beast's lament on the wind.

Eugen

What if it left something else behind as it went kickin' and screamin' into the Otherworld? That's what I'd do if it wasn't my time to leave.

Katalina

It's worth scouring the island for a map piece is what you're saying.

Eugen

Bingo. Where was the primal last seen, Green Knight?

Octavia

Allow me to guide you in the general direction. Shall we begin our search over there, my liege?

There is nothing more for them to do but to search the ruins of civilization for a Sky Map piece.

If Gran's unproven theory is correct, everyone is still under attack from the Otherworld's mysterious meddling even now.

Tau'luk's urging to attain the King's Eye rings in Gran's ears. Surely that must be part of a yet unknown countermeasure.

While the crew comb Wakwaaq Island, the Violet Knight appears before them, claiming to have a message from the former king. He states that the Otherworld's assaults are not limited to combat, and that they also fight by rewriting facts and memories. Gran must complete the King's Eye to see through this deception. Concluding his visit, the Violet Knight leaves behind Wakwaaq Island's Sky Map piece for Gran.

Does something about this desolated town feel... off to anyone?

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I expected to see scars of battle everywhere, but nothing here seems to indicate any fighting with the Otherworld took place.

Octavia

According to the former king, the Otherworld attacks via unconventional tactics.

Katalina

How so?

Octavia

Imagine, if you will, a truly horrifying scenario in which ruin simply befalls you without warning, as if cause has been rewritten for a desired effect.

Lyria

That kind of sounds like Akasha's power... Does that mean the Otherworld has that kind of power too?

Octavia

It would seem so. Consequently, one could argue that was the reason the former king desired Akasha's power.

Octavia

Or perhaps—

Ahem. Sorry to butt in, but I think I'll take over the exposition from here.

Greetings. Been a while, hasn't it? I'm actually here as His Majesty's messenger.

The Violet Knight steps out from the shadows and bows to Gran.

Violet Knight

You're the new king, right? Congratulations on moving up in the world.

Violet Knight

Now for the real meat of the matter. His Majesty—er, I should say Lord Tau'luk—has something important to pass to you. Mind if we do this here?

Despite being caught off guard by the unexpected visitor, the captain nods.

Violet Knight

First, a message.
"A king sees what the masses do not. Do not under any circumstance forget that."

Violet Knight

"Should even the gentlest road of peace become rocky and harsh, a skydweller mustn't lose their testament—that testament being one's will to choose."

Eugen

Get to the point, man. What's Tau'luk tryin' to say?

Violet Knight

Let's see if a thought experiment is more digestible.

The Violet Knight flips Gran a single coin.

It falls into the captain's cupped hands, and upon closer inspection, Gran notes that both sides of the coin bear the same relief of a face.

Violet Knight

Which side did it initially land on? Heads or tails?

Whether Gran answered heads truthfully, lied and went with tails, or refused to answer, ordinarily the world offers those three possible outcomes.

But in this case, I tossed Gran a double-faced coin. It was a trick, and just like this coin, the Otherworlders are pulling a con on the world.

Violet Knight

In other words, they scraped off the tails sides and slapped the two halves together so that heads is the only answer.

Violet Knight

Gran, who once had three outcomes, has been reduced to choosing one and only one.

Violet Knight

Everything is being funneled toward the sky's destruction.

Rackam

Ah, it seems I've struck a chord with our esteemed helmsman. Be careful about the choices you make.

Violet Knight

"Like the predecessors who made their choices during the War, they validated the worth of a blue sky in order to avert destruction."

Rackam

Whoa! Yeesh, what's with the yelling, Rackam?

Eugen

Didja see someone? Pretty sure we're the only living souls on this island though...

Rackam

Have you gone senile? How could you miss the Violet Knight standing right in front—

Gran looks at the bewildered helmsman and gives a small shake of the head.

Rackam

Okay, that's weird. Seems like I'm the only one who saw him...

Rackam

Really, none of you? You're all lookin' at me like I'm crazy...

Anamaria

Rackam

Maybe there is more to this uneasiness I've been feeling lately...

That's right, Rackam. No one remembers the conversation with the Violet Knight.

The only ones who do remember are probably just you and me.

While those thoughts swirl through Gran's head, the captain looks down at the Violet Knight's coin again.

Lyria

What's that, Gran? Did you find a map piece?

The double-faced coin has been swapped out without Gran even noticing.

In its place is what seems to be a bona fide map piece and an accompanying note.

Written on the note is the same message the Violet Knight had announced aloud: "A king sees what the masses do not. Do not under any circumstance forget that."

Rackam's anxiety mounts as he watches his fellow crew members act on their rewritten memories. For some reason, only he and Gran have been spared. Anamaria notices his tension and attempts to comfort him, but Rackam harbors too much suspicion about his fellow helmsman's origins to feel reassured.

Vyrn

I don't like how easy it was to find that map piece. Seems too good to be true.

Um, I'm still not sure why we're going around collecting these. Can someone remind me?

Rackam

Rackam

Basically, the Otherworlders are overwriting reality using methods we have no way of detecting. The map pieces are the key to pushing back, I think.

Rackam

We have to find the final island no matter what.

Eugen

Edan. That one, right?

Katalina

I didn't see that name mentioned anywhere in any of the textbooks I taught from. I wonder if the kingdom's national archives have anything on it.

Rackam

Sounds like a good lead to me. C'mon, let's head back to the castle.

Vyrn

What's gotten into Rackam? He's so fired up all of a sudden...

Rackam's brisk pace back to the Grandcypher corroborates Vyrn's observation. This helmsman is motivated.

Rackam

From a different perspective, it could also be called impatience.

Aren't we going a bit too fast today, Rackam?

Rackam

Never know when the Otherworld'll turn this world on its head, so...

Anamaria

Sure, if the stuff you've been saying is true. You claim they've already altered the past before?

Anamaria

Why even bother going up against that? Yet you've still got tons of fight left in the tank. He'd approve.

Rackam

Anamaria

Yeah. The man I had decided to spend the rest of my life with. You guys would've been fast friends.

Anamaria

Whenever I see you taking off in the ship, I feel somehow liberated.

In the conversation with Anamaria, it seemed as if she knew more than she was letting on. A pall of doubt falls over Rackam.

Rackam

...!

Knowing that his memories, as well as unknown pasts and presents, are being toyed with, Rackam tightens his grip on the helm as if willing the Grandcypher to go even faster.
